As we made our way from the crushed remains of the Skeletons we had come upon after our rest there were unusual rumbles in the cave floor that Miz’r said reminded her of a tunneling Purple wurm. Not an enemy we would want to encounter in this situation by any means, but what it actually was turned out to be far worse. we made our way through the Darkness my staff illuminating the darkness around us for a good 50 or so feet, the claustrophobia of the darkness waiting to rush in if the light has been overwhelming since descending into this pit; but we had Miz’r scouting ahead out of the light looking for any danger that our surface eyes could not see. We found her standing at the edge of a large hole in the ground she told us of what looked like a humongous pair of skeletal wings pushing a large earthen mote up through the darkness above to adjoin it to the “skywalks” we had come down. We racked our brains to think of what could be so large and skeletal other than an undead dragon and we hoped it wasn’t a Dracolich. There was more in the hole that we had expected to find on further investigation we found it to be a crypt of the Hobgoblin kingdom of Zythaari and this chamber was dedicated to a Duke named Preadaut, a Naval commander depicted as the slayer of a thousand dwarves if the murals on either side of the burial chamber were t be believed. In the center of the chamber sat an ornate tomb with carvings and decorations, I said we should see if there was anything of use to use in there before we collapsed what must be the source of all the undead hobgoblin skeletons we had come across. The others objected to this but I proceeded anyway, I wrenched the top of the sarcophagus off with a heave and found an ornate set of armor and a mask shaped like a skull, the mask had obvious properties to make the wearer appear more intimidating but a more subtle magical enchantment. When I lifted the mask off the skeleton I could feel that it was imbued and it changed shape before our eyes, it formed into the visage of a dragonborn skull with elongated teeth and pronounced scale spikes along the cheek bones, I claimed it for myself. We left the crypt and began walking in the direction we had been moving before; Kildrak insisted that we not desecrate the tomb further but Thangobrind and I must have been thinking the same thing. Once we were a fair distance away there was another loud rumble as the tomb collapsed on itself, I looked to Thangobrind who looked quite satisfied with himself hiding that from his idol was a bold move considering Kildrak did not want him there to begin with; he has proven very useful thus far however.
We came upon Miz’r again only coalescing out of the darkness beyond her was a very large, very angry Skeletal Dragon, and our worst fears were realized we had been traipsing through a Dracolich’s domain. She sat at the top of a short stair that was flanked by ramparts and stone watch towers, her enormous tail dangled for one of the ramparts flinking like an angry cats. She greeted us harshly without introduction or heed like we were but insects in her presence and had Thangobrind not sniffed out that she may not have been as powerful as we thought she would have fooled us all. She demanded we pay her tribute for trespassing and leave the way we came, her sheer size was enough to cow us into backpedaling but the tribute she demanded was too high we were to leave anything of value, magical or monetary and if it were enough she may have spared some of us. We hesitated to meet her demands and did not think fast enough, I began to say something about defending ourselves when she unleash a torrent of blackish fire that caused most of us to blackout. When I came to my senses a few moments later the beast was collapsed on the ground and Miz’r was removing her dagger from a small gap in the tail bones of the Lich she had managed to strike a point that cause the dracolich to fall unconscious allowing the rest of us to regain our wits, it was only a moments respite however as she quickly rose from her pain induced slumber and began her assault anew. I unleashed my most powerful spells bolstering my defenses with elemental energies, Adricks attacks seemed to take a greater toll on her than the others; must have been the radiance of the attacks his deity had bestowed upon him. The lich turned and unleashed another brutal gout of the dark flame, but something amusing (considering the situation) happened it was redirected at her and not only caused us to fall victim to the paralyzing effect but also herself, Thangobrinds handy work! This went on for some time I lost track of how many times I fell into a state of stupor unable to make heads or tails of the world but all I know is that Thangobirnd was causing the same thing to happen to this dracolich that had attacked us.
We had been hitting the Lich with everything we had to convince it that we were an enemy that would not be killed easily as she had though and at the very minimum leave her rethinking an attack on an enemy she knew nothing of, but the reality was we were running out of tricks, my most powerful spells were exhausted, Kildrak and Adrick were bloody and ragged Thangobrind’s hat of tricks was running dry it was time to run. Miz’r unleashed a flurry of devastating blows on the Lich and she let out a great roar lashed out at Kildrack and Adrick with vicious bites then wrapped herself in her wings and sank into the stone as though it were water.
This was our chance to flee I bellowed to the others to make for the stairs and between the towers that was the direction we needed to go and that was the way we should break for, as I passed the towers I slowed my flight as the others were moving much more cautiously than I and had noticed a purple glow coming from the towers looking back I see now that skeletal Archers are now moving to positions on the towers to rain arrows on my comrades and I as we try to find some sanctuary from this newest enemy, we know not what is to come but the battle has not ended and we may die in the process but we will die while purging an evil from the first work that the Dragon Father will not abide and I will take pride in that death if it comes!
